Blogging Against Disablism Day - my blog
Today was a BADD day: Blogging Against Disablism Day. Seems to be, in at least some part, the brainchild of Diary of a Goldfish and I offer my small part of solidarity - another blog on the pile.
First off, I offer respect and awe to all those working and living with disability. My recent work with the BBC Ouch, the See Hear team and several other members of the BSL (British Sign Language) community has offered me an entirely new view of the deaf and hearing-impaired communities - and with some luck, in a few weeks or so I'll be able to report that I've been able to make something useful and exciting happen in that world online and on digital TV. We'll see - all eggs and no chickens in the basket still...!
Anyway - BSL is a fascinating language and it is a language in its own right - it's no more English translated into signs than Italian is English translated into, well, Italian... You get where I'm going with this. For the record Signed English is English translated into signs.
Some great online voices I've discovered - and had the pleasure of getting advice from include film maker Charlie Swinbourne and all round good bloke with a fine brain Ben Fletcher both of whom's blogs are well worth reading / watching for some insight into the world of deaf and/or partially-sighted individuals. Another blog worth reading is Grumpy Old Deafies from whom I have borrowed the discovery of this lovely little signed piece of film. It's Italian I believe, and is created by editing together 4500+ photos rather than using film. Why bother? Well, because this is the result and it's got a really haunting, lingering quality, stuttering only slightly between shots, but enough to take you off balance and really begin to notice the frames, the images and the stillness of the silent world.
